RTX Gouging

I don’t think alderlake will be scalped at least. The motherboard and ram costs are quite high. Â Coupled with the stuff being preorderable should effectively kill profitability.Â

I missed my que in 2020 for an EVGA 3080FTW by 10 hours. Was at work. Waited and waited for my que on a 3070. Then in May this year, my son got his que for a EVGA 3070. Fortunately it was a 'KR' not a gimped 'KL'. Not that I want to start mining, but even so. He had already snagged a MSI 3070, so I grabbed the his card from EVGA. July I finally get a notice for a 3070Ti 'KL', and actually caught it in time. Asked around to a few buddies. Nobody wanted it so I passed it up.
I managed to get a water block for my 3070, so I am happy with it. Great clocks for gaming, 2100mhz on the GPU and 2000mhz on the memory. 2235mhz on GPU and 2078mhz on mem for a Time Spy score of 15,361 and 9663 for Port Royal. Dont think it has ever broke 55C other than testing on air.

Today, you cant even buy a second tier card for the same cost of an entire system. As you all know, video cards have tripled in retail price - not COST. This is out-right price gouging. Call it what they want. I call it straight up greed, scalping, and gouging. Starting right from the top - the manufacturers (remember MSI?). Right down to the end retailer. Crypto-mining is more likely the reason than a semi-conductor shortage. Large companies and corporations have invested thousands if not millions in crypto mining. Literally buying PALLETS of high-end GPUs.
There are oil and gas producers that have set up mining farms on well sites. Utilizing low cost power generated from 'raw gas'. Generators that were already producing excess electricity for that given location. Other industries are doing the same thing. These arent just little farms. 100's of high-end GPUs for a single mining operation. There are only so many 'pallets' of new GPUs. Those with the cash and 'pull' will get first dibs. We, the actual intended consumers, get the left-overs - at a premium.
Semi-conductor shortage? Pathetic excuse. GM may have gotten away with that excuse, so others follow? GM seems to be the only car/truck manufacturer with an empty car lot in my city. And it is literally empty. Ford and Dodge both have full lots.
Sadly, I believe prices wont come down. Just like the covid mandates and restrictions were implemented, they are here to stay. Those mandates and restriction are not only here to stay, they will only get tighter. And GPU prices will continue to get higher.
Sorry for the rant. Couldnt help myself after seeing what newegg is charging for a 3080 today, and listening to CBC radio. The CBC is the epitome of pathetic. Fear mongering at its greatest. And a great source of mis-information and unfounded claims.

Simply not worth the costs.
Maybe for X-mas 2022 but nothing before that.
Late 2022/Early 2023 is next gen release. So i think it's better you save your cash for it. Expect 3000usd 4090 (similar for AMD equivalent).

Meanwhile, something unexpected came through for me today, my backorder for 3080 strix all the way from early oct 2020 at Memory Express came in. I didn't need but my friend did so gave it to him. I was shocked at price too. 1366 Cad including taxes ( so 1219cad). Lucky Friend

It's not useless for gaming. While equivalent RTX cards are on the same performance level as AMD cards at lower resolutions, they pull slightly ahead at higher resolutions due to much higher memory bandwidth.

So apparently ampere architecture is power efficient by looking at the rtx a6000 with gddr6. The extra bandwidth with gddr6x is useless for gaming. The rtx a6000 uses less than 300watts

Economy isn’t doing great also and that debt we accumulated (still is) is going to be difficult to be resolved. We will see more people forced to unload there rigs, etc. If the central banks raise interest rates to fight inflation, lot of people may not be able to afford there mortgages. Consider your savings plans, etc before going into gaming computers. Plan ahead for your personal finances.Last edited by section31; 07-10-2021, 05:11 PM.

Thats newegg 3rd party. Not Newegg. Third party guys always do that. In general, you only buy sold from newegg, amazon, bestbuy. Though exception for some stores that are well known with there own sites like mechanical keyboard.com, ppcs, titanrigs, modmymods or are direct from manufacturer

Canada Computers Bundles
Also the 3090 Strix backside cooling is an mess. You want one of four solution.
1. Active Cooling from EKWB, Etc
2. Passive Active Cooling from Watercool (in development). Aquacomputer
3. Get something like Optimus Block.
4. Mount fans blowing onto backplate
Both options are expensive and watercool isn’t doing strix. Waterblock issue is bit of pain imo. Slow releases, overall. Look at how nobody but watercool own store carrying the new products and ekwb own recent expo has stuff like thise new rads not out till nov. You endup choice the card based on what block company you are willing to use.
I myself was fortunate i got good price for my optimus strix block but i technically did lot of free advertising for optimus (invested into there products, started the ocn thread, convinced my watercooling friends to go optimus and others among the watercooling community to also go optimus). However most people here aren’t as patient as me in waiting for parts.
Its always hindsight but i wish kept the evga kingpin i ended up letting others have. Cost as much as my 3090ftw3. Who would know that Optimus would go active backplate and other special stuff for there Kingpin block.Last edited by section31; 07-10-2021, 06:38 AM.

Originally posted by notgod View PostNow its the retailers blatantly gouging. They are obviously marking up the price considerably. First clue is the fact newegg is selling the same card stand-alone, at same price as CC sells in a bundle. Furthermore, the new batches of EVGA cards are now gimped so less useful for cryptomining. EVGA claims these new cards will have exact same gaming performance . That remains to be seen. So now we are paying more for the same card, but it is gimped. I would assume this is across the board with all nvidia card manufacturers. New EVGA cards now have the 'KL' designation rather than the 'KR' designation.
I actually sidegraded from 3090 to 3080ti. Tough decision but i got nice cash back (650cad) and i don’t hold my cards for more than 2years max. So lhr/whatever is of minor effect on me, chances are i will just waste the card as inactive. I just don’t have time or other things i rather do than play games.
