  • 4VS1 - 2x6990 vs 1 RX480

    So I yoinked an RX480 that was sitting in the office and took it home to run a few quick tests and ran a few comparisons against two 6990's with awkwardly mixed results.

    My UPS has a wattage reading that I took note of while running a couple bench marks, so wattage rating is the total power draw from the UPS to the tower, I even shut down my synology to ensure it's power draw was not included, and the monitor was moved to the surge only side. Wattage are still and approximate based on observations of the UPS display.

    Quadfire 6990
    Idle: 261W

    3DMark11: X5997
    typical: 820W
    peak: 920W

    CatZilla 1440P: 3130
    typical: 460W
    peak: 520W

    RX480
    Idle: 189W

    3DMark11: x4610
    typical: 450W
    peak: 500W

    CatZilla 1440P: 6343
    typical: 450W
    peak: 500W

    The 6990 catzilla score to me suggests that it isn't working all the cores and I'll revisit it. But I'm also not blown away by the RX480 3DMark11 score.

    Fixed Quadfire numbers

    I played with the crossfire settings a bit and came up with the following adjustments

    CatZilla 1440p: 10760
    typical: 900+
    peak: 1k+
    With those constant power draws the UPS alarms were going off

    3d mark: x6545
    same power draw as before

    Playing with the settings I didn't get nay better numbers out of the RX480

      Shut one 6990 down and just ran off of one of them.

      Idle 216W
      Catzilla 1440p: 5660 :: 500-550
      3d mark: x3730 :: 450-500w

      So single card vs single card the 480 does come out above, not as big as margins as I would have hopped for though.
