  • CPU upgrade to keep my x79 system around longer...worth it?

So I have the "upgrade itch", but I can't bring myself to waste money on the x99 platform, since I see not much benefit over x79. I have an x79 rig, as follows:

    Asus Rampage IV Extreme Gene
i7-3820 quad core (mildly OCed to 4.3Ghz at under 1.3v)
    16GB DDR3
    Two Zotac GTX980's

While doing some drunken eBaying, I noticed that I can pick up the i7-3960X extreme edition 6-core for less than $300 now. On release, it was a totally overpriced chip (like ALL extreme edition CPUs), but now it's affordable, cheap even. Would you bother with an upgrade like that?

hmmm. toss up. are you doing more multithread compute?

or just itchy for upgrading something... anything?

Just itchy, and kinda poor, so I can't justify an entirely new system. My system is complete bonkers overkill for what I do, in EVERY aspect. Hell, I think my PC gets used most to either play Fallout 4, or watch streaming sports.

I know!! Plus I'm wondering about the overclockability of that extreme edition.

            Get a E5 2670 for 60 bucks. 8 cores and 16 threads.

Is that socket 2011 or 2011v3? If I wasn't interested in OCing, I'd nab one of those for sure. I was pondering building a home ESX server not long ago, just to teach myself some VM stuff, and I found it amazing that I could put together a dual socket 2011 system with 2 xeons for just over $1000.

I think x79 still have lots in it. After I moved to X99 some things get snappier, but overall it is the same experience. I think whwre it may be a probe is number PCIe lines if you want pci SSDs in addition to GPUs.

                  E5 2670 is a 2011 CPU. It's SB-E.

That's where the extreme edition CPU would come in handy. I must look up the PCIE lane charts when I get home today. I'd LOVE to nab an Intel PCIE SSD, but they're still too much $$$ at the moment.

I replaced the 1100T with a 8370 because of that same itchy feeling. Would have gone with a 9590 but I'm sure it's 220W TDP would have caused issues with this dated CH4EX 140W supported socket.

This CPU is looking interesting! Is it OC-able at all, or no?

No, since it's a Xeon processor.

I thought so, but I'd heard that there was *one* xeon that was OC-able. Damn, you can build a dualy multi-core monster for not much $$$ with these things.

I remember that too, but it was like 5% overclock
