  • Sleeving

    Hey.
I am getting into sleeving the cables in my computer and had a question about the wire.
Would using an all copper non braided 18 awg be any better than an braided 18 awg non pure copper wire.
The 18 guage pure copper is quite flexible and can conform in some quite nice shapes if needed
Comments suggestions before I get started?

Impedance might be lower but it would likely be trivial, but yeah I have thought of this, and due to the flexibility but the ability to retain shape it might be a desirable option.

Looking forward to your build pix if you decide to do this

      Oh Please do this mod!!

I've seen this rarely, and its totally viable option.

I can't find the page on modzoo with the best example...

Be very careful when stripping the wire that you do not nick it too much, solid wire likes to break at points of weakness like that and is very poor for vibration resistance as well. Nice for precise bends if done gently and try not to bend it too often as the copper will harden at those points and become brittle. Gentle bends are the best and do not fasten too tightly to chassis points. Will look great if done correctly for sure.

Thanks for the advice and the motivation all.
I had some red and black, and green and black wire kicking around and had my kids do some braiding with it in different ways but it didn't turn out well
due to 8 wires and 6 wires don't cooperate when braided.. I just wanted to see what braiding looked like.

Another thin with the solid wire is crimping the connectors to it. Don't use your expensive crimpers for your ATX pins for these wires. The solid wire will destroy the crimper. Use a cheaper pair that will connect only one crimped point of the ATX pin at a time.

That's the way I do them with the "Engineer" crimpers that Daz sells.

K-limes build log shows soldering the wire directly on the pins.
