  • Making the D5 Strong Variable speed

I posted a similar thread last year, but I am trying my luck this year. I am looking for a molex 12v voltage regulator for my D5 Strong pump.

The goal is to lower it to lowest RPM for noise reduction when not gaming. I am also trying not to get a D5 vario for $150 after tax, while I have this D5 Strong already.

maybe easiest to go with this

linked to any good fan controller?

Not a good idea, the pump might burn down the motherboard since it needs a lot more power than a regular fan. The D5 uses 2 amps or 33 watts.

Use a 50watt/ channel fan controller.

Hooded: Sure, but at which price? If it costs half the price of the pump, we are not going anywhere

I thought the D5's only pushed 24W? I've tried voltage controlling a D5 strong with a Sunbeam 30W/channel controller, but I didn't like it. It only throttles down a little before it goes off completely. Turning the dial on the controller, when you get below 70-75%, it shuts off.

Here are a few options from Amazon.ca

D5's require a min 8V to start and run and a Max of 24V.
              Google has some good returns

This one looks like it might just do the trick.

This is *almost* what I am looking for. The only downside is that I have to slice one of the molex cables coming out of my PSU and have it as 2 wires input into this controller. The output (going to the pump) is not an issue as I already have it sliced up (one yellow and the other ground = 12v).

EDIT: the ideal solution would be to have a molex as input and output. Looking through Amazon. I would only need 8v to 12v though. I wont be using the 24v

These will only output a maximum of what you input.
So if your only inputting 12V that's the max you'll be able to output.

2 molex male pins and 2 molex female pins solder or crimp to new wires.
Find a spare molex male female connector wire those to the motor speed controller, then plug the damn thing in.

I guess I could do that, making it somehow plug and play. Gonna order it now. Thanks!

I don't think that work. Pump operated 8-24v, so 5V mods and 7v mods wont work. So, the only way is buy big variable resistor that can reduce voltage in 8-12 range.

It appears for me that cheapest and easiest option is Vario.
