Why not use Nas4Free, FreeNas or something similar that doesn't require a hardware raid card?

Dedicated will be faster, then software.

BSG had a group of secret cylons that could "hear" the song...
but later on Starbuck started hearing the song in her head and
it turned out that the notes were navigational co-ordinates to finding Earth.

Not necessarily faster if you do it right.

                        http://www.zfsbuild.com/

"We have obviously run benchmarks as part of this project, but the benchmarks are not the primary goal of the project. The goal of this project is to share information about how to build a low cost, high performance, easy to manage ZFS based SAN. We have built and heavily tested this design. The ZFSBuild2012 design can deliver over 100,000 IOPS and costs about $7k to build."

drkCrix thank you for sharing. This is interesting read.

There is another major reason I want dedicated card is RAID portability between system. With upgrading non-stop migration is big pain and I'm looking into plug-n-play solution.

The ZFS method is fairly robust when it comes to hardware changes etc... just like with a hardware raid card a drive dies, plug in a new one and it rebuilds, say the motherboard dies or you want to upgrade, once you re-install the OS you just import the disks and your back up and running. Two of us in the office are putting together our own ZFS systems for home use/proof of concept as we may do something for data storage at the hospital using off the shelf parts (as opposed to paying tens of thousands for a HP\Dell\IBM storage solution)

I used to work with few hospitals in the past on data destruction and recycling services. This is HARD job to be an IT person at hospital. Good for you that you guys keep going despite all limitations!
