  • U-Channel Substitute?

Please feel free to comment after you stopped laughing at my "typing while thinking" moment. (in my defense this thread was started at 10:28pm)

Can heat shrink be used in place of u-channel molding? Any ideas/suggestions for u-channel molding? I know you can get rubber grommets, but I'm thinking about custom hole sizes.

    Thanks!
    Mario

Crappy Tire has car door trim moulding and you might find something in screen door trims. Can I stop laughing now ?

I used some ¼" id clear plastic tube from crappy tire and cut a slit in one side. It then slipped over the any sharp edges. Paint black with plastic paint. Cheap works well, was a little tricky to cut the slit evenky but after I figured that out all was good.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news scaccima; but during my initial w/c build last year, I scoured every hardware store here in Calgary (Lowes, Canadian Tire, Totem, Home Depot, Rona, Calgary Fasteners) in an effort to try and save both time and money to find some form of U-channel. All to no avail.

I even thought I would try and modify some door trim; but unless my case had side panels 1/4" thick, this was not possible.

Was hoping that Daz would have been able to get some of this in by now (Ontario being a more industrialized province vs. Alberta); or, considering also he has a couple of products from mnpctech, but it remains to be seen...here's hoping for future products from mnpctech

I'll ask the guys at GM today if they know any industrial suppliers that may carry such stuff.

Maybe Daz will buy a roll of this a sell it off by the foot.

Here's a video from mnpctech ( Case Window Installation) and link to their website (U-channel molding) http://www.mnpctech.com/UChannel.html

Though Bill's pricing is pretty cheap; $3.99 US for a 6' roll, it's the wait that kills just about any project (had to wait almost 3 weeks for U-channel to arrive).

I was talking to the electrical superintendent at work yesterday. He buys U-Channel rubber from Guillevin Int. industrial electrical supplier. They have stores in every major city across Canada.

I stopped by Guillevins site but did not find u-channel rubber in the catelog. I will go into store on Tuesday and see if they have any in stock. I'll be getting it from free as my company will be buying it on they're account

Any chance you can make a deal with mnpctech to carry this product Daz?

If they do indeed have U-channel in stock, perhaps Daz can make a deal with them...certainly better than having to go through mnpctech (middleman).

IDK whats really up with the MNPCtech store. all their cool mod stuff is ALWAYS sold out.
Perhaps they're just too busy to up keep, or maybe they've moved to custom orders only?

oh, btw, I did buy something from Canadian tire that was for autoparts window trim.
It was too thick, and very stiff.

Personaly, I'm happy with the ¼" tube sliced down the back painted black.

If you look closely at the latest shots of my rig, you can just see it around the opening for the cables to pass through. On the right hand side of the 5¼" drive bays.

I've never personally ordered anything from mnpctech, but I would assume there would be duties to pay before final delivery is made?
