My water cooled 460's are only at 30 degrees celcius and that is under 100% for last 2 weeks (running folding at home 24/7). Ambient temp right now is 19.7 degrees. The computer is also 10 times quieter too, why didn't I water cool sooner??

Because it takes us noobs a while to get around to actually attempting to "get our feet wet", without actually getting our feet wet. Folks (such as ourselves) take great risks to water cool our rigs; just think of all the money we've spent getting our PC's just they way we want them, then throwing water into the equation...simply doesn't compute

I think it's also because even though water cooling is becoming more mainstream; it's still a special "niche", we're of the breed that are tired of just putting the pieces together (not unlike LEGO), then calling it a day. We need a new challenge, and this is where water cooling comes in.

From my own (somewhat brief) experience so far; I've killed one video card, and doused 2 motherboards with antifreeze (which is a hell of lot more difficult to clean up than regular coolant), but would I ever turn and go back to air cooling...not in a million years .

I can only dream that my ambient temps ever reached 19 degrees Celsius; on a day like today (ambient temp is around 28 degrees Celsius), I'll be lucky to get below 37 degrees Celsius (on my AMD system)

I agree with both of you. Natural convection will be upward, but the fans will overcome it. But fighting convection will have effects in how air behaves in your case. In places where the fan air doesn't hit, convection will force hot air up. This tug of war (or actual war) can cause little micro hot spots (areas where hot air can stagnate). It might not bite you every time, but the best recommendation is to not fight convection.

So pretty much the consensus are in and I should switch my top mount rad from air in to air out then?

If you want to experiment it is fine

I just saying what problem I ended up with when I did the same.

For my build, the front rad draws air in ... and the roof Rad blows air out.
and the top rad cools water first... FYI.

....worst thing that can happen with top mount fans sucking air in - you see more dust in your case

yep. no filters here. although I did plug up the floor panel to not allow any airflow.

well. I've got one more shift after tonite to conclude this crazy marathon.
So I figure I would try to get back to work fixing this "mess"



plus I've got to add back the MIPS mosfet block, clean up some dust, and considering a little paint job.
